Bölgeblick Vase by Aino Aalto

£100

The Bölgeblick vase forms part of the original pressed glass collection designed by Aino Aalto in 1932. Its name - Swedish for “wave glance” - refers to the concentric ripples that radiate across its surface, inspired by the effect of water disturbed by a falling stone. The stepped rings give the form both rhythm and clarity, establishing it as one of the enduring icons of Nordic modern design.

The design was first presented to a glass competition organised by the Karhula-Iittala glassworks. The series later received international recognition with a gold medal at the 1936 Milan Triennial, and pieces from the collection have remained in continuous production ever since.

Beyond its visual identity, the pattern reflects a pragmatic approach to production: the rings improve grip, allow for efficient stacking, and subtly disguise irregularities inherent in early pressed glass techniques.

A considered piece of design history, the Bölgeblick vase sits comfortably as a standalone object or for simple floral arrangements, bringing a quiet, tactile quality to interior spaces.
